Addressing the Franchise Market Imbalance

Thuma Khula Markets was established in 2024 to address the significant competition imbalance within South Africa’s Franchise market. The initiative was launched as a project of the National Zakat Foundation and Durban Companies Market to create a more inclusive and equitable marketplace, countering the dominance of the large retailer groups that have historically controlled much of the sector.

Thuma Khula Markets represents a collaborative effort between historically privileged entrepreneurs and their historically disadvantaged counterparts. Together, this initiative sets to challenge systemic barriers and empower the informal and independent market. Despite the country’s progress, many regulatory laws and economic structures that exclude large segments of the black population from meaningful participation in the economy remain intact.

The founding members of Thuma Khula Markets emerged during a time characterised by economic exclusion and exploitation, where historically disadvantaged South Africans were disproportionately relegated to poverty. Commercial banks and financial institutions of the past perpetuated racially fragmented business support policies, leaving many small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) owned by historically disadvantaged individuals without adequate financial or commercial support. This exclusion entrenched financial and commercial secrecy that mirrored the broader inequalities of the apartheid state.

Thuma Khula Markets seeks to break these cycles by creating an ecosystem that connects franchises, independent buying groups, farmers, NGOs, and logistics providers. By leveraging technology, fostering collaboration, and ensuring transparency, we aim to empower small businesses and drive sustainable growth in South Africa’s franchise market. Our mission is to create an inclusive platform where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
